Moving Into a Dorm Room? Here’s Everything You Need to Know to Get Started!
Moving into a dorm room? Here's everything you need to know to get started!
Moving into a dorm room is an exciting milestone, but it can also be overwhelming if you’re not sure what to expect or what to bring! Below is a guide to help settle you into your home away from home!
Before You Move In: What You Need to Know
Understand the Dorm Rules and Regulations:
Before moving in, familiarize yourself with your dorm’s rules and regulations. This can include policies on guests, quiet hours, prohibited items, and how to handle maintenance requests. Knowing the rules ahead of time can save you from any surprises later.
Roommate Communication:
If you’re going to have a roommate, reach out to them before moving in. Discuss what each of you is planning to bring to avoid duplicating items like mini-fridges, microwaves, or rugs.
Reaching out ahead of time will create a great opportunity to set expectations about shared spaces and daily routines while creating a bond with the roommate early on!
Check What’s Provided:
Many dorms provide basic furniture such as a bed, desk, chair, and dresser. Before shopping, check with your school to see what’s included in your room and what’s allowed. This will help you avoid bringing unnecessary items.
Plan Your Layout:
Consider how you want to arrange your dorm room. Think about where you’ll place your bed, desk, and storage units. Planning your layout in advance can help make the move-in process smoother.
Consider Space Limitations:
Dorm rooms are often small, so be mindful of space limitations when packing. Choose items that are multifunctional or compact, and avoid over-packing.
What to Bring: Dorm Room Essentials
Bedding:
Twin XL Sheets: Most dorm beds are Twin XL, so make sure to bring sheets that fit. Consider bringing two sets for convenience.
Comforter/Blanket: Choose a comforter that shows off your style!
Pillows: Bring pillows for sleeping, and consider decorative throw pillows to add style.
Mattress Pad/Topper: Dorm mattresses can be uncomfortable, so a mattress pad or topper can make a big difference.
Storage Solutions:
Under-Bed Storage Bins: Utilize the space under your bed for extra storage.
Closet Organizers: Hanging organizers or shoe racks can help maximize closet space.
Drawer Dividers: Keep your clothes and accessories organized with drawer dividers.
Bathroom Essentials:
Shower Caddy: A portable shower caddy is essential for carrying toiletries to and from the bathroom.
Towels: Bring a set of bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths.
Shower Shoes: Flip-flops or shower shoes are a must for communal bathrooms.
Toiletries: Stock up on shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, and other personal care items.
Desk and Study Supplies:
Desk Lamp: A good desk lamp is essential for late-night study sessions.
Notebooks, Pens, and Stationery: Bring enough school supplies to get you through the semester.
Laptop and Chargers: Don’t forget your laptop, chargers, and any other electronics you’ll need for classes.
Planner/Calendar: Stay organized with a planner or wall calendar.
Kitchen Essentials:
Mini Fridge: If your dorm allows, a mini fridge is great for storing snacks and drinks.
Microwave: A microwave is handy for quick meals and snacks. (Be sue to check if this is allowed for your specific dorm room! Some dorm room floors have a community microwave available to share.)
Reusable Utensils and Dishes: Bring a set of reusable plates, bowls, and utensils.
Snacks: Stock up on non-perishable snacks like granola bars, chips, and cereal that can be left in a storage bin.
Laundry Supplies:
Laundry Basket/Bag: A sturdy laundry basket or bag is essential for transporting clothes. (Be sure to select something that is easily carry-able going up and down the stairs as some University's have the washer and dryer available on the bottom floors)
Detergent and Dryer Sheets: Don’t forget laundry detergent and dryer sheets.
Clothing Hangers: Bring plenty of hangers for your closet.
Cleaning Supplies:
Disinfecting Wipes: Keep your space clean with disinfecting wipes.
Broom/Vacuum: Depending on your floor type, bring a small broom or handheld vacuum.
Trash Can and Liners: A small trash can and liners are essential for keeping your room tidy.
Decor and Comfort Items:
Wall Decor: Posters, tapestries, or photos can make your room feel more personal and become your home away from home.
Rug: A small rug can bring a lot of personality to your room!
Throw Blankets and Pillows: Add layers of comfort with throw blankets and pillows.
Lighting: Floor or desk lamp is essential when cramming in a late night study session while the roommate is ready to get to sleep!
Miscellaneous Items:
First Aid Kit: Keep a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and antiseptic.
Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle to grab on the go to class!
Extension Cord/Power Strip: Make sure you have enough outlets for your electronics.
Fan: Dorms can get stuffy, so a small fan might be necessary.
Wall Plug-In Air fresheners: Excited to light your favorite candle in the fall? Sadly, you are unable to have open flames in the building so go on adventure with your roommate to select your favorite scent of the month keeping your room smelling fresh! Moving into a dorm room is a big step, but with the right preparation, you can make the transition smooth and enjoyable. By knowing what to expect and bringing these essential items, you’ll be ready to create a comfortable, organized, and personalized space that feels like home. Happy moving!

30th Year Anniversary Art Show Artist Feature: Virginia Otto-Hayes
In celebration of our 30th Anniversary Art Show, we are delighted to feature Virginia Otto-Hayes, our talented Art Operations Manager. Virginia has been a vital part of our team at B-Unlimited, bringing her creative vision and unique artistic skills to everything she does. We asked Virginia some questions about her work and inspirations, and her responses provide a glimpse into her creative process and what attendees can expect at the show.Virginia Otto-Hayes, originally from Little Rock, holds the title of Art Operations Manager at B-Unlimited. For the 30th Year Anniversary Art Show, Virginia created floral paintings on recycled paper made from an old journal she no longer wanted. She explained, "I’d been wanting to get rid of the thing for a while but got inspired by the idea of taking old bits of myself and repurposing them into something new."When asked what creativity means to her, Virginia said, "I see creativity as problem-solving. It’s figuring out how to communicate thoughts, emotions, concepts, etc. in a new and unique way. You have to get creative in all aspects of life."
As a graphic designer who does digital illustrations by day, Virginia considers herself more of an "Arts-and-Crafter" by night. She loves working with her hands and channeling her creative energy in a more tactile way during her time off. While she enjoys trying various techniques and materials, she admits, "It’s definitely a 'jack of all trades, master of none' situation. If I see something I want to try on TikTok, chances are I’ll buy all the supplies, use them twice, and then tell you that you can borrow them whenever you want because I’ve moved on to something else." Interestingly, she finds that "trash TV" is essential to her creative process.Regarding the 30th-anniversary art show, Virginia is more excited to see everyone else’s art than to showcase her own. Her communities and friend circles play a huge role in her life, and her love language is definitely gift-giving. She loves learning how to make things she can share with friends. "Weddings, bachelorette parties, concerts, book clubs, dinner parties - there’s always a reason to create things that bring people joy," she said.
We are thrilled to showcase Virginia Otto-Hayes' work at our 30th Anniversary Art Show. Join us in celebrating this milestone event and experience the creativity and innovation that Virginia brings to her art. The show will be held on July 19th from 6-9 PM at B-Unlimited Headquarters, 2291 S School Ave, Fayetteville, AR 72701. Don’t miss the chance to see her beautiful floral paintings and much more!
30 Year Anniversary Art Show Artist Feature: Ben Strawn
As we continue our series of artist features leading up to our 30th anniversary art show, we are thrilled to introduce Ben Strawn, a multifaceted artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Hailing from Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ben has been long recognized as a creative genius in our community.
Ben Strawn is bringing a variety of pieces to the 30th anniversary art show, including past personal works and new creations inspired by the show's theme. Among his contributions are larger paintings, sculptures, and even some playful stickers for the merch table. He’s particularly excited about using the show as a deadline to complete a few sculpture projects he has been working on.
Describing his pieces, Ben says, "I'll have a few pieces in the show, and they are all different. The personal works are paintings on layers of plexiglass, giving them a diorama-like feel. I'll also have some Risograph prints, which I print at home on this monstrous GR3770 Riso machine – a piece of art in its own right. I love incorporating toys into my art. One piece features a baba toy that I weathered and placed in a scene, creating a sense of collaboration with the original designer."
The creation process for Ben is immersive and time-intensive, though he doesn’t keep track of the hours. "It takes hours," he says. "Once I decide on a project, I focus on it, often pulling all-nighters. When you enjoy what you're doing, it doesn't feel like any time at all."
For Ben, creativity is an essential part of his existence.
"Creating art is so central to my life that its absence would be like not existing – not to be dramatic," he laughs. "It's a security blanket and a way to connect with people despite being an awkward, shy person. The skills I have from making stuff and solving creative problems give me something valuable to share with others."
Ben is drawn to techniques and materials that add an element of unpredictability to his work. "I am interested in processes that bury my input a little bit," he explains. "With layered plexiglass artwork, there's a material interaction that I can't control. Risograph printing transforms my digital drawings, adding grain and noise, making the art look like something from a 1940s golden book. I enjoy all the imperfections that come out of these processes."
One tool Ben cannot work without is his Risograph printer. "I love having my own printer," he says. "I lucked into getting a really old, broken one for free and managed to fix it up. It has remained a project, and I don't know what I'll do when I can no longer get it running."
At the 30th anniversary art show, Ben is most excited to showcase his personal paintings. "Most of the work I do at B-Unlimited is commercial illustration, so some people I work with aren't aware of my other work. I'm also excited to get some art on the wall from my family. My sisters both paint, my daughter makes beautiful zines and dolls, and my wife is a fashion designer and instructor. Sharing all those connections is something I'm really looking forward to."
Ben's inspirations are varied and whimsical. "Toys, dioramas, children's books, stormy weather, and the promise of rainbows afterward all inspire me," he shares. Although he finds problems with everything he makes, this drive for perfection keeps him experimenting and creating. Currently, he is focused on making a children's book that he plans to self-publish on his Risograph, a project that excites him greatly.

30 Year Anniversary Art Show Artist Feature: Lane Murphy
As we gear up for our 30th Year Anniversary Art Show on July 19th, we're thrilled to introduce our second featured artist, Lane Murphy. Lane, our talented Senior Workflow Coordinator, has shared some fascinating insights about his journey and creative process. Let's dive into our conversation with Lane and learn more about his work and inspirations.
Lane Murphy, originally from Tampa, FL, grew up in Spring Hill, FL. Moved to Arkansas for school and decided to stay because he enjoyed it so much. Lane has crafted a unique piece for the upcoming art show—a beautiful entertainment center made from an old door and reclaimed lumber, with antique store knobs as cabinet handles.
When asked to describe his piece, Lane shared, "It’s pretty simple in its form. I found the door at a flea market, and the idea immediately snapped into my head. I’ve seen other people use old doors for desks and table tops, so there was inspiration from there."
The process of creating this piece has been a labor of love for Lane. "I’m currently still working on it, but from drawing up the design to the finished product, I’d say about 15-20 hours. I don’t really keep track of the time. I’m just starting out, so I’m probably way underestimating the time I’m about to put in," he explained.
For Lane, creativity is about transformation. "Using your mind to change the world around you. I feel like creative minds aren’t just limited to artistic media but in everything that we do. Just being able to come up with a plan to solve any given problem is inherently creative—you’re creating change."
Lane is particularly drawn to natural and sustainable materials in his work. "I like using natural materials—woods, metals, fabrics, oils, etc.—while trying to use sustainable sources of those materials. Reclaimed lumber is a favorite, or incorporating old industrial pieces into the design."
His inspiration comes from a love of pre-WW2 buildings and design. "I love old pre-WW2 buildings and design in general. I like the permanence and emphasis on importance of Art Deco design with the simplicity of contemporary art. I think Art Deco architecture is to America what Roman architecture is to Rome. Contemporary designers like Frank Lloyd Wright have inspired my work too. I think the simplicity in the designs allows for the natural materials to show off. So, I think my style is a combination of these if I’m making something of my own design. I want things to be timeless so they’re kept around and have a place in any decor. If I’m reusing materials, I like to build whatever suits the material in a way I think best shows it off, even if that’s something different and unique."
When it comes to his favorite creations, Lane has a soft spot for cutting boards. "Probably cutting boards, mostly because I like gifting them to people, and their reactions are always nice. But I don’t think I have a favorite out of all of them. They can be tedious to make sometimes, but having the right tools helps."
We’re so excited to see Lane’s unique entertainment center at our 30th Year Anniversary Art Show. Stay tuned for more artist features and get ready to be inspired by the incredible talent within our community!
Save the date: July 19th! We can't wait to celebrate with you and showcase the amazing artwork created by our talented team.
30 Year Anniversary Art Show Artist Feature: Alison Meeler
Alison Meeler is an artist whose passion for weaving is evident in her meticulous craftsmanship and creative expression.
Currently residing in Starkville, MS, Alison has cultivated a thriving artistic practice dedicated to the art of weaving. Alison’s approach to creating art through weaving is characterized by attention to detail and a deep appreciation for materials. She primarily works with cotton and wool, carefully selecting each fiber to achieve the desired texture and color palette for her pieces. From conceptualization to completion, Alison's process involves thoughtful planning and execution.
"When I begin a new project, I start by choosing the materials for the warp and weft, considering how their colors and textures will interact. The weave structure is crucial in bringing the design to life, and I calculate the amount of yarn needed before setting up my loom."
Alison draws inspiration from the natural world, particularly the interplay of colors and textures found in landscapes and natural materials. "Color and texture are fundamental aspects of my work," she says. Her creative journey is marked by continuous exploration and experimentation, pushing the boundaries of traditional weaving techniques.
For Alison, creativity is not just about making art; it’s a vital escape from the digital world.
"For me, weaving is a hands-on creative release from all the digital means that are ever present in life. I'm also a graphic designer, so I have a lot of screen time and find it's essential for me to include tactile studio time to keep a healthy creative balance. I encourage anyone and everyone to find an analog hobby, practice, or creative outlet to enrich your creativity."
We are delighted to feature Alison Meeler and several other talented artists in a series of highlights leading up to our 30-year anniversary art show. Alison’s dedication to weaving and her commitment to artistic excellence make her a standout artist in our upcoming event. We look forward to showcasing Alison’s talent and inviting you to experience the beauty and innovation of her woven creations.

B-Float 2024
This week, the entire B-Team took to the Buffalo River for our annual B-Float adventure. We believe in working hard and playing hard, and this trip was the perfect way to celebrate that balance.
The rain stopped just in time for us to hit the water with our canoes. The river was calm and inviting, setting the stage for a fantastic day. Some of us might have tipped our canoes over, which only added to the laughter and fun.
We spent the day fishing, swinging on the rope swing, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. It was the perfect way to unwind and bond as a team. At B-Unlimited, we believe in working hard so we can play hard, and this trip was a great reminder of why we do what we do. Here’s to more adventures with the B-Unlimited crew!
